To draw a circle we place the light pen where the center is to be and press the button ‘circle center,’ leaving behind a center point. Whereas Alberti’s armature gently corrected the erratic radius of our hand, Sketchpad effectively ignores it and uses the light pen’s location only to decide how much arc to draw. By never registering the wobble of the hand-drawn circumference on screen, Sutherland sought to correct error before it could even be recognized by the human eye. Sutherland’s extraordinarily prescient and elegant program, Sketchpad: a Man-machine Graphical Communication System, inherited everything the US air defense system SAGE had recently invented, and added almost everything else required to make the CAD interface through which so much design is now thought, developed and represented, including the physical mechanics of drawing something-a cursor and hand-held input, first in the form of a touchscreen “light pen” that would later become a mouse-as well as deleting it. Whereas Alberti devised a way to draw curved perfection by erecting an approximating join-the-dots scaffold, Sutherland did away with the stepping-stone dots altogether. Sutherland, under Claude Shannon’s wily guidance, radically augmented the corrective capacity of the algorithm at work in an exercise that is not difficult for machines but exceptionally tricky for humans. Crucially, in both, one does not have to be able to draw a circle to draw a circle. When in 1962 Ivan Sutherland designed the first drafting program that would allow us, amongst other things, to draw better circles, he was in many ways simply providing an update to Leon Battista Alberti’s circle-drawing system issued some five hundred years earlier in De Pictura. If to err is human, to design corrective systems is all the more so.

Received: JanuAccepted: ApPublished: May 28, 2014 This effect has been attributed to variation among moon phases in lunar illumination, but our results do not support that hypothesis for angler-caught muskellunge.Ĭitation: Vinson MR, Angradi TR (2014) Muskie Lunacy: Does the Lunar Cycle Influence Angler Catch of Muskellunge ( Esox masquinongy)? PLoS ONE 9(5):Įditor: Shin Yamazaki, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, United States of America We argue that this variation is evidence that the effect of the lunar cycle on catch is mediated by biological factors and is not due solely to angler effort and reflects lunar synchronization in feeding. There was no difference in the lunar effect between expert and novice muskellunge anglers. The lunar effect was stronger for larger muskellunge (>102 cm) than for smaller fish, stronger in midsummer than in June or October, and stronger for fish caught at high latitudes (>48°N) than for fish caught further south. Several factors affected the amount of variation explained by the lunar cycle. We could therefore not conclude that the lunar effect on catch was due to an effect on fish behavior alone. For Lake Vermilion there was a significant effect of the lunar cycle on angler effort. We obtained angler effort data for Wisconsin, Mille Lacs (MN), and Lake Vermilion (MN). On some lakes and at night, the maximum relative effect was higher. Anglers fishing exclusively on the peak lunar day would, on average, catch 5% more muskellunge than anglers fishing on random days. The predicted maximum relative effect was ≈5% overall. At night, more muskellunge were caught around the full moon than the new moon. More muskellunge were caught around the full and new moon than at other times. Using periodic regression, we showed that the number caught was strongly related to the 29-day lunar cycle, and the effect was consistent across most fisheries. And Valentina Tereshkova was the first woman to travel into space aboard Soviet spacecraft Vostok 6." Pyle also includes profiles of more well-known figures, such as Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Yuri Gagarin. We analyzed angling catch records for 341,959 muskellunge ( Esox masquinongy) from North America to test for a cyclic lunar influence on the catch. John Casani was a brash young engineer who took over the struggling Voyager program to reconnoiter the outer planets at a time when success was far from certain. Margaret Hamilton was an accomplished mathematician and one of the first female software engineers to design programs for spaceflight software that proved critical to the success of the moon landing. John Houbolt was an engineer who convinced NASA leadership that the most effective way to land on the moon was to use a seemingly risky technique called 'Lunar Orbit Rendezvous,' which worried NASA planners but was the only way to make the landing possible by 1969. Some examples from the promotional material: "Joe Engle was a daring test pilot who set multiple records in the dangerous X-15 rocket plane and later commanded the space shuttle three times. At times, Shankar’s music is the very voice of India’s sorrow. The simple, subsistence way of life is represented with honesty and dignity. The music by Indian sitarist and composer, Ravi Shankar, who was born to a Bengali Brahmin family, adds an authentic tone to the world of village life Ray recreates with a powerful sensuous immediacy that is almost tactile. But he takes great pains to make this an authentic Bengalese work of art. Ray, formerly an illustrator, has explained that he went into filmmaking after seeing Da Sica’s classical work of Neo Realism, Ladri di Biciclette ( Bicycle Thieves). At the same time, he deepens the humanism of his story by portraying vivid portraits of poverty-stricken people. He pushed the boundaries of Neo Realism by focusing on the economic struggles of the lower class, the dispossessed, rather than the working-class characters depicted in the Italian school. The Criterion Collection describes the film in a low-key way as “a depiction of rural Bengali life in a style inspired by Italian Neo Realism.” As in Neo Realist films, Ray’s debut movie was shot mostly with available natural light and on-location. The difference for the Indian master filmmaker is that many of his later movies, especially Jalsaghar ( The Music Room), Devi ( The Goddess) and Charulata ( The Lonely Wife) are just as artistically expressive as Pather Panchali ( Song of the Little Road), whereas Welles’s later films probably never reached the level of artistic excellence achieved in Citizen Kane. Instead of a screenplay, the film was shot from the director’s notes on the novel upon which the story is based, and from his drawings in the storyboard. As an independent filmmaker, Ray achieved a huge breakthrough with very limited resources. The fact that this was Satyajit Ray’s first ever film, probably makes it the most significant debut feature since Citizen Kane itself. Pather Panchali ( Song of the Little Road) is, for me, the most compelling and moving depiction of poverty I’ve seen on the Big Screen. In 2011, a more flexible device was sent in and captured mysterious red hieroglyphs, which hadn’t been seen by human eyes for thousands of years. A strange, tiny tunnel leads from the queen’s chamber to another blocked-off area. One chamber in the Great Pyramid not accessible by humans was, four years ago, explored with machines. Infrared analysis from satellites in orbit around the earth has even helped locate buried pyramids, so there are plenty of examples now of how such technologies can enhance our understanding of these enigmatic structures.īut we might also be helped by robots. It’s something that would have to be orchestrated responsibly, but Stevenson says she understands why there might be interest in the idea. 4 hours ago &0183 &32 The sarcophagus of Egyptian pharaoh Ramses II went on display in Paris on Friday in a rare international loan. Recently, an international team of architects and scientists used infrared thermography to detect unexpected temperature differences in the stones of the Great Pyramid. But we only have access to a few chambers inside it, such as the great gallery and the king’s and queen’s chambers. Built more than 3,000 years ago out of more than two million blocks of stone, the Great Pyramid is the biggest ancient pyramid in the world and today stands at 139m (450ft) tall, though it would have been slightly taller when first constructed. Egyptian officials have also chimed in recently to refute Carson’s ideas.īut that still leaves the question of what we know about the pyramids’ interiors. “Archaeologists have in fact found grain silos in Egypt, they’re well known to us and they look nothing like pyramids,” she says. Their technology will capture 3D images without the need to lay a finger on them.īut Stevenson also says that counter-theories about the pyramids actually being huge grain stores are not helpful. For example, CyArk – a non-profit organisation – recently began to digitally preserve over 500 world heritage sites, from the Brandenburg Gate to the Ziggurat of Ur in Iraq using non-invasive lasers. Modern archaeological practice is concerned with “making sure we’re not harming the heritage that we’re trying to understand”, explains Alice Stevenson at University College London’s Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology. Indeed, they are so significant – from their complex designs to the hieroglyphs and artifacts found inside them – that any suggestion of breaking into internal tunnels or chambers forcibly would be seen as inappropriate and irresponsible. For one thing, the pyramids are structures of outstanding archaeological importance. Produced by Chris Thomas, it is regarded as one of the best debut albums of all time, and has been named one of the best albums of all time by VH1 (no. Their self-titled debut album was released in January 1980 and was a success in the United Kingdom and the United States both critically and commercially. The Pretenders (original line-up), Dominion Theatre, London, December 1981 In January 1980, the band reached No. 1 in the UK with "Brass in Pocket", which was also successful in the US, reaching No. 14 on the Billboard Hot 100. The band's first single, a cover of the Kinks song " Stop Your Sobbing" (produced by Nick Lowe and recorded at the July Regents Park sessions) was released in January 1979 and gained critical attention. Hynde named the band "The Pretenders" after the Platters song " The Great Pretender", which was the favourite song of one of her former boyfriends. Shortly thereafter, Gerry Mcilduff was replaced on drums by Martin Chambers. This band, then without a name, recorded five tracks at Regents Park Studio in July 1978, including a cover of The Kinks' song "Stop Your Sobbing". Hynde then formed a band composed of Pete Farndon on bass, James Honeyman-Scott on guitar, and Gerry Mcilduff on drums. Although it was rough, he felt he had seen and heard enough "star potential" to suggest that Hynde form a more permanent band to record for his new label, Real Records. Hill was impressed and arranged a day at Studio 51 to record another demo. He arranged a rehearsal studio in Denmark Street, London, where a three-piece band consisting of Hynde, Mal Hart on bass (he had played with Hynde and Steve Strange in the Moors Murderers), and Phil Taylor of Motörhead on drums played a selection of Hynde's original songs. The Pretenders formed in 1978 after Dave Hill at Anchor Records heard some demos of Hynde's music. She was involved with early versions of the Sex Pistols, the Clash, and the Damned and played in short-lived bands such as Masters of the Backside (1976) and the Moors Murderers (1978 lineup). Hynde, originally from Akron, Ohio, moved to London in 1973, working at the weekly music paper NME and at Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood's clothes store. The Pretenders were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005. Following the deaths of Honeyman-Scott in 1982 and Farndon in 1983, the band experienced numerous personnel changes Hynde has been the band's only consistent member. The original band consisted of founder and main songwriter Chrissie Hynde (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), James Honeyman-Scott (lead guitar, backing vocals, keyboards), Pete Farndon (bass guitar, backing vocals) and Martin Chambers (drums, backing vocals, percussion). The Pretenders are an English-American rock band formed in March 1978. Morrow found the perfect place in La Quinta and requested to purchase the site – an abandoned quarry. The two friends discussed creating a true golf experience - a golfer’s golf course where a limited number of dedicated individuals could play anytime on a challenging, yet playable course that would be unparalleled in its spectacular surroundings.Īfter playing the Tom Fazio designed Black Quarry Ranch club in Florida, Morrow set out to find the perfect site to build his dream course in the Coachella Valley. Morrow and Burdick were both members at PGA West. One day, after yet another five-hour round where they had to wait on every shot, Henry Burdick, one of his playing partners, complained that this was ridiculous and that they should build their own course. What he and some of his friends didn’t care for were overcrowded courses and the hassle of having to schedule tee times. He was such a fan that he took it upon himself to play Golf Digest’s Top 100 courses. To say that Morrow loved the game of golf would be an understatement. Living nearby was avid golfer Bill Morrow. Known as the Keller Pit, it was a working quarry until the late 1980’s. Tucked in a scenic cove between the foothills of the Coral and Santa Rosa Mountains in the eastern part of the Coachella Valley was an abandoned sand and gravel pit that for more than half century had been mined by the County of Riverside to extract materials for building local roads. Rather than paraphrase the history of the club, I'm going to copy it directly from its website: The Quarry was the first Top 100 course I would visit in that fashion. Some clubs are very open to it, some are not. As a member of the panel, I'm able to contact clubs to set up visits to evaluate their course. Not only did I think it would be a fun way to make my opinions somewhat more useful, but it would also open many doors that would otherwise be difficult to crack. When a friend contacted me about joining the ratings panel for a major golf publication, I had to jump on it. Having played over 40 of the country's best courses, I had built up a bit of knowledge about golf course architecture. Playing The Quarry at La Quinta began a new chapter in my bucket list experience. |
